Late lunch at Nanyang Philippines (Glorietta) |
I was pleasantly surprised to find out that NANYANG is a homegrown brand especially after sampling some of their menu items. The restaurant chain offers the classic Singaporean "kopi tiam" or coffee shop experience which has become popular not just for SG locals but also for those visiting the vibrant city-state.
Singapore is one of the favorite destinations for Filipino travellers, making their food culture something that is familiar to many of us. NANYANG aims to satisfy one's cravings with a nostalgic trip back to those memorable days in Singapore. For those who have never been, the restaurant introduces authentic flavors that transport the diner more than a thousand miles away without having to bust out a passport.
Traditional Kaya Toast Set Meal (Php168) |
We could not visit NANYANG without having one of their traditional Nonya Kaya Toast set meals. It comes with a toast filled with butter and Kaya spread, two soft boiled eggs and a coffee. The toast is meant to be dipped in the eggs which have been seasoned with white pepper and dark soy sauce. So good!
Of course, we also wanted to sample something more substantial. As Filipinos, that means we wanted some rice. We tried the Hainanese chicken rice meal done two ways: the classic boiled preparation and fried. The platter comes with a fragrant and flavorful cup of rice cooked in chicken broth, some bok choi and the three classic Hainanese chicken sauces. I loved combining their ginger, hoisin and chili sauces to make the perfect dip for my chicken!

At only Php268 a platter, I have to say that NANYANG offers a real bang for your buck! Singapore is one of the most expensive places to eat, and frankly, the prices at Manila's dining scene has been skyrocketing as well. Therefore, it's such a treat that visiting NANYANG does not feel like highway robbery! It also has to be pointed out that they serve a boneless fillet of Hainanese chicken. That means there is more meat per serving compared to ones that are serve bone-in chicken.
Fried Hainanese Chicken Rice (Php268) |
Coming in at the same price, the laksa (fish ball or prawn) is also a must-try. I personally prefer my laksa a tad bit spicier, but the rich, creamy broth totally hits the spot! Despite the reasonable price point, they did not scrimp on the ingredients. Each bowl has enough toppings to satisfy your cravings!

The menu also includes other classic Southeast Asian favorites such as Nasi Lemak, Curry Chicken, Mee Siam and others. I did not get to try all of them, but that just gets me more excited for my next visit.
Homemade Nasi Lemak (Php248) |
Apart from the classic kopi, NANYANG also offers a variety of hot and cold drinks. My personal favorite is the Iced Teh Melaka, but they also have Kopi Jelly, sparkling flavored sodas and the wildly-popular Milo Dinosaur.
