The Manila Hotel: Old World European Luxury at the Champagne Room

A visit to the Champagne Room at The Manila Hotel is like stepping through a time machine. The intricate baroque style interiors can bring you back to the old world. The place is dripping with aristocratic European luxury.

The beautiful interiors

Chintz fabric covers all the chairs and old school chandeliers adorn the entire room. Heavy curtains, plush carpeting and crystalline details cover every square inch of space. You would almost want to change into your ball gown once you catch a glimpse of the Champagne Room.

Despite the intimidating decor, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that having a meal here will not necessarily burn a hole in your pocket. My friends and I sat down for a set menu which ranges from only Php1,800 to Php2,100 nett, depending on your choice of main dish.

For starters, one has a choice between the classic Manila Hotel Caesar’s Salad or a Parma Ham with Burrata Salad. Of course, Parma Ham and Burrata immediately called my attention. You can’t go wrong with this classic Italian combination.

However, it’s always a treat to have a Caesar Salad at The Manila Hotel. The dressing was prepared from scratch right at our table and we really enjoyed seeing the salad come together right in front of our eyes. A Caesar Salad seems like a simple affair but the authentic dressing really needs a good mix of the freshest premium ingredients.

The French Vegetable Soup is also deceptively simple but the flavours were spot on. The broth was clear but there was a depth in flavor. The gruyere croutons added an extra layer of texture and flavor.

For the main dish, we had a choice between the Herb Marinated Grouper Fillet (Php1,800/set) or the U.S. Prime Rib Roast (Php2,100/set).

If you’re looking for something on the lighter side, opt for the grouper. The fish is served with a caper-tomato compote. asparagus risotto and grilled vegetables. The risotto was the real revelation for me. The creaminess went well with the light and slightly compote.

US Prime Rib Roast

The U.S. Prime Rib Roast is a carnivore’s dream. I had mine rare and it was perfectly juicy and tender. A small baked potato provided just the right amount of starch to accompany my meat.

At this point, one would almost feel like there’s no more room for dessert. However, you won’t be able to help yourself once you are served with the Ohaina Chocolate Gateau. This slice of rich chocolate cake is semi-dark so it’s not too sweet. Have it with a drizzle of French Vanilla sauce and some raspberries for some balance.

Cap off your meal with some fresh fruits or a selection of French Cheese. Sip some  coffee or tea with some macarons and I can guarantee that you will be thinking about your next booking.

Located just on the foot of Mount Namsan and the famous N Seoul Tower, you can’t miss this area if you’re on a tour of the city. One of the big reasons for a visit? Lots of great shopping opportunities and a bustling street food market! In the video below, my friends and I try to sample as much of the food as we can. We  give you honest reviews of each item so that you’ll know what you can’t miss and what you can skip when you visit Myeongdong Street Food Market. Off the top of my head, I highly recommend: 1. Egg Bread (gyeran-ppang/gyeran-bbang). This is sweet and savory at  the same time. Think of it as a your morning pancake and eggs all in one. I even make it with bacon at home. Korean Egg Bread (Gyeran-ppang/bbang) 2. Steak: I can’t be sure if this is the highly regarded Korean beef (Hanwoo) or not. However, I can guarantee that the beef they sell on the street here is much better than
