Rizal Monument in Madrid Looks Just Like the One in Luneta
Did you know that there is a Rizal Monument in Madrid, Spain? What’s really amusing about it is the fact that it’s an exact replica of the one in Rizal Park (Luneta) Manila!
If I’m being honest, I actually visited the one in Spain a few years before I went to the one in Manila. I probably went to Rizal Park as a child in a very early field trip but I have no memory of it. After finding out about the Rizal monument in Spain, I went to have a look and decided to see the original one in Manila as well.
The one in Spain was erected in 1996 and the plaza where it stands has become the venue for numerous celebrations held by the Filipino community in Madrid. Watch the video above to see the monument and my quick visit.
Interestingly, the plaza is located along Avenida de Filipinas! To get there, all you need to do is take the mero and get off on the Islas Filipinas station. From there, it is about a 500m walk to the plaza. Just use google maps to find out which direction you need to go!
About two years ago, the City of Madrid also named a street after Dr. Jose Rizal. I have not been there yet, but I will definitely visit next time I’m in Madrid!
