MAISEN Tonkatsu Restaurant Launches New Menu Items

New Japanese concepts are popping up all over the metro and I’m always on the lookout for a new favorite. MAISEN Tonkatsu in BGC has just introduced three new iterations of the classic tonkatsu and I was more than happy to indulge.

aburi cheese katsuni

I am personally not a fan of having my tonkatsu in its classic form. The cutlet plus simple sauce combination just doesn’t cut it for me. I always go for the sweet, savory and saucy katsudon. The new ABURI CHEESE KATSUNI is basically a katsudon topped with lots of melty cheese. I mean seriously, how can you go wrong with that? It may seem odd at first, but adding cheese to classic dishes has been a big trick that the Japanese and Koreans have been exploiting in recent years.

katsu doria

Since we are talking about cheese, another new menu item at MAISEN is loaded with cheddar and mozzarella. The Katsu Doria is a traditional tonkatsu that’s served on top of special curry rice, cream and cheese.

Frankly, this dish is super rich. I could probably only finish half and keep the rest for later. You’ll do well to order something tart and fresh alongside this indulgent dish.

pork hamburg

This reminds me of a classic meatloaf. A slab of tender minced pork is doused in a generous demi-glace that really makes you want to order some extra rice. The hamburg itself is very tender and the sauce is a little on the sweet side. This will be a sure hit with the kids.

All the new menu items can be ordered a la carte or as a set meal with refillable rice, cabbage, jelly, pickles and miso soup.

What’s even better about the MAISEN branch in BGC? There’s a full bar! Bombay Sapphire is available here and they just launched a line of gin and tonic variations that are perfect for the summer heat!

The refreshing cocktails go really well with the rich food! I especially liked the combination of the sweet, creamy dishes alongside the citrusy and slightly bitter cocktails.
