Student Budget? No Problem! Sarsa at Parilla in Maginhawa Offers Affordable Meals

Not all students of “The ARRRNEOWW” are loaded. Sometimes the allowance gets spent on too many fro-yos and Yabu lunches and budget options are needed. Same goes for Iskolars ng bayan and students from other schools nearby.

Don’t fret, SARSA at PARILLA in the junction between Maginhawa St. and Anonas Extension is here to help. It’s a little bit hard to find but the unassuming exterior hides a nice, quaint and well-airconditioned restaurant.

Basically they offer your usual silog meals for Php100 or less. They also offer other classic “ulam” options which are good enough to share among groups.

I had a TOCILOG for breakfast because tocino is one of my absolutely favorite artificiall-colored and radioactive looking meats (It stands right up there with Tender Juicy Hotdogs). The tocino was served with garlic fried rice and a fried egg, classic tocilog style.

It was clear to me that this isn’t the commercially-sold tocino. It wasn’t pink all the way through, which indicates that it’s home made. That’s a good thing health-wise but you know, when it comes to tocino for me, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it… this one was a little bit tough even though they were able to replicate the classic sweet-savory tocino marinade.

The rest of our group really enjoyed the danggit but the tapa was likewise slightly tougher than we would like.

I think that the real stars of the menu are the viands that they serve. The classic Filipino “ulam” dishes are well-thought out and cooked really well. They have a selection of meats, seafood and vegetables which would be great to share in a small group.

We particularly liked the grilled squid and sarciadong isda.

They also served a variety of other grilled meats like the classic pork barbecue, chicken inasal and inihaw na tilapia. The ensaladang talong was also a great addition to the menu since its one of the perfect side dishes for grilled items.

Once we were done with our main meal, we could not resist trying their ice cream. They don’t sell the usual commercialized stuff here. They have their own ice cream, flavord with natural and locally available ingredients like gabi, cheese, ube and mangoes and corn.
